The concept of net neutrality is that the internet service provider (ISP) does not interfere or regulate traffic. There is not a tier system nor does the ISP throttle service to one customer in favour of another. Google has undertaken a plan to allow internet users to check on their service:

Helping Mimi Ausland Grow Her Site

Posted: October 24th, 2008 | Author: Catherine | Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

Mimi Ausland is just twelve years old. However, she knows how to harness the power of the internet and she is entrepreneurial for a wonderful cause. She launched a site for dogs and cats:

“…The site, www.freekibble.com, launched April 1, with the store donating 10 pieces of kibble every time someone went to the site and answered the daily trivia question (a donation is made whether you get the question right or not.) The Humane Society of Central Oregon started getting hundreds of pounds of food. But Mimi’s idea was destined for larger things.

Within two months, information about the site had gone national, and the pet store couldn’t keep up with the demand for donations…”

Perhaps Mimi would agree with the late Walt Disney. It was Mr Disney who said “it’s fun to do the impossible”. Mimi Ausland is helping to feed hundreds, perhaps thousands, of cats and dogs in shelters. - Let’s help grow Mimi Ausland’s site. Go to http://www.freekibble.com/ and let’s tell others about Mimi’s idea. - Thanks!

The question has never been about Paula Creamer’s ball striking talent. For years, people who follow women’s professional golf have recognized her golf skills. However, winning requires a mind-set to handle pressure and adversity. Ms Creamer has learned how to win and she has demonstrated it this season. Kudos to Paula Creamer for a stellar finish to her golf season.

A Double Win for Candace Parker

Rookies are not suppose to do this. Traditionally, there is a learning curve, as first year players adjust to professional basketball. Candace Parker, however, is a unique talent:

“Candace Parker received the WNBA’s most valuable player award Friday, becoming the first player to win the award along with the rookie of the year honors. The Los Angeles star was unanimously selected rookie of the year.”

It seems that Ms Parker has adjusted well and made her presence felt. Kudos to Candace Parker. It was a remarkable introduction to professional basketball.

William Yuan: A Young Idea for an Energy Problem

Posted: September 22nd, 2008 | Author: Catherine | Filed under: General | Tags: , , , , , , | No Comments »

Innovation can happen from young ideas. William Yuan is proof of that with his creative approach in harvesting solar energy:

“…Solar technology is improving all the time, but one 12-year-old boy may have the key to making solar panels that can harness 500 times the light of a traditional solar cell. William Yuan is a seventh grader in Oregon whose project, titled “A Highly-Efficient 3-Dimensional Nanotube Solar Cell for Visible and UV Light,” may change the energy industry and make solar energy far easier to harness and distribute.”

If anyone questions the importance of early education to stimulate young minds, remember to mention William Yuan. Kudos to a forward thinking, young scientist.

How Leader Dogs Have a Good Start

Posted: September 21st, 2008 | Author: Catherine | Filed under: Dogs and Dog Training | Tags: , , , , , , | 1 Comment »

It is a rewarding, necessary task but it is also guaranteed heartbreak. The task is giving Leader Dogs a good start, so that the possible service dogs can be trained, in the future, for vision and hearing impaired individuals:

“…The main goals of a puppy raiser are to teach the dogs socialization skills and make them aware of everyday sights, sounds and experiences. That means taking the puppies to the grocery store, malls, parade, parks, on elevators, fireworks, restaurants, Pistons games and fire stations.”

And then, that puppy raiser says ‘good bye’, as the dog moves on to learn to be a service dog. The importance of the work that the puppy raisers do is invaluable. It is providing pup with the basic foundation to be bold and stable. Kudos to the people and families who give these service dogs such a great start. They are a vital part of a love story.
