Marta from Brazil: This Is Magic
Posted: September 28th, 2007 | Author: Catherine | Filed under: Uncategorized |There are moments of magic in sports. It’s memorable - and it instantly becomes part of the recallable, verbal history of the game. Such a moment was the goal that Marta scored against the United States women’s team, in the World Cup semi finals. It was speed, imagination, creativity, athleticism… the following YouTube clip captures the moment.
There is a Portuguese term: “o jogo bonito”. It is a term that some soccer fans apply to the game that they love. The term roughly translates as “the beautiful game”. Marta’s goal is an example - and it is now part of soccer magic.

You are so right. Rudolph Nureyev at the height of his career could not have performed a more artistic move than Marta displayed for the world in scoring that incredible goal. That is what people come to the stadium to see. Yes, I wanted the USA to win so badly, but. . .when you witness something so beautiful, you have to stop and say that is what it’s all about; not the winning or losing, but so thoroughly enjoying a game, having fun, and expressing joy of life in an artistic and athletic moment that, as you say, is magical.
Yes, the same way nature is formed by ying and yang, act and potential, the young Marta turns to be so sublime perfect in the field…
She is pretty fast and yet keeps the pacewith the rythm of the team; she´s
nice with the ball and very good without the ball,: she´s able to see the game around but sees what will come next and next…
She´s individualistic and yet very collective in the spirit of the game, she combines plain magic with transpiration, fun with competitiveness.
Who else so far could perform such a pictorial move in the
tightest frame of TIME/SPACE, and note it: two dozen square meters and some eight seconds time…
Lucky we are to witness a game that beautiful.God forbid we miss it tomorrow.
