Hope Solo Clarifies Her Statement
Posted: September 28th, 2007 | Author: Catherine | Filed under: Uncategorized |Much of the criticism about Hope Solo’s post game remarks has focused on her lack of support for Briana Scurry. Ms Solo clarified her remarks today:
“…”I have felt compelled to clear the air regarding many of my postgame comments on Thursday night. I am not proud or happy the way things have come out,” reads a statement attributed to Solo on her MySpace page. “In my eyes there is no justification to put down a teammate. That is not what I was doing.”"

There were comments in a previous posting questioning why I would want Hope Solo as a team mate. - I would prefer to have a team mate who is honest and not speak in clichés. She has an obvious passion for her sport and confidence in what she does. Would it be preferable to take the field with a goalkeeper who thought that she would have been beaten equally or worse by the team from Brazil? Ms Solo remarks can be viewed as a statement of self confidence. Could she have stated it in a different manner? Of course, she could have. Remember, though, that this was an athlete who had to watch as her team was pummeled. Her statements reflect her competitiveness, her candor and her passion. And, yes, give me a team mate like Ms Solo any day…

Of course she’s going to retract her comments and claim she was misunderstood. Isn’t that the current trend of what’s expected from spoiled athletes, who think their misdirected opinions and actions carry more importance than they really do. What possible choice does she have after producing an uncontrolled rant fueled by an inner turmoil which should have never seen the light of day? Her comments are not that of a professional athlete: one who desired to express heartfelt emotional honesty and disappointment over an unexpected decision, but of a bitter, distasteful, and selfish individual. These types of expressions have no place in sports or anywhere else for that matter. How could such ugly negativism not turn off a lot of players, coaches, and decision makers in the sport. Just picture Nike’s new slogan: I COULD PLAY BETTER THAN YOU, IF I HAD A CHANCE or THIS GIRL DOESN’T KNOW WHAT TEAM MEANS. Or adidas: TEAMWORK IS NOTHING.
To those of you trying to justify her comments: sometimes it’s tough to see the true colors of heroes.
But if we’re not team players, all the time, what kind of world can we expect to live in. Well, just look around. Our me, me, me, me world. Do parents spend any real time with their children?
Poor examples are coming from somewhere.
I am not attempting to justify what she said but I guess we all have said the wrong thing at the wrong time.
I guess that Tom Aplayerparent never played on a team, and if he did, didn’t have an intense passion for his sport. He must be a liberal. You know, never say anything to upset any one.
Boy! That guy Cioffi hit the nail on the head in his reply. A man after my own heart. He’s right , that guy must have played on the Yale tiddly wink team.
