Coach Greg Ryan Benches Hope Solo
Posted: September 26th, 2007 | Author: Catherine | Filed under: Uncategorized |Hope Solo will not be playing against Brazil. Instead, the U.S. Women’s team goalie will be Briana Scurry, a veteran of international competition. It is a change that caught many by surprise. Hope Solo certainly has been playing well and the U.S. Women’s team has been winning consistently.
It is a tactic that undoubtedly will foster debate. However, this is a team - and Briana Scurry is certainly an experienced member of that team. The defense will be as steady for her as it has been for Hope Solo.
I, for one, am not one who thinks that this is a disruption in ‘team chemistry’. These women have lived, worked and played together as a team. They win and lose as a team. Just as other substitutions are not viewed as disruptive or subject to such intense scrutiny, this is a decision that Coach Ryan made for the situation at hand. No one knows this team better than Greg Ryan - and I think that this team trusts his judgment. He has guided them well so far.

You still think this was a good decision?
Cat,
As history has shown,, you were wrong! An uninspired effort by a confused team led to the worst defeat in US WNT history! Hope would have given the team a better chance against a clearly better opponent! Hope’s post game comments were right on but she sacrificed her career in the process! She will end up the scapegoat as the US soccer federation continues it’s ways and chooses coaches for political reasons instead of actual qualifications!
Hope was the best we had and she was benched by a scared coach looking for an edge that was not there!
Catherine,
So you believe that it would have been 0-6 had Coach Ryan not made that “brilliant” move? Nice try.
