The Newspaper Industry Flounders

When even a short list is compiled, it focuses on the extent and the magnitude of problem that newspapers face. The names are all familiar:
“…The properties were chosen based on the financial strength of their parent companies, the amount of direct competition that they face in their markets, and industry information on how much money they are losing. Based on this analysis, it is possible that eight of the fifty largest daily newspapers in the United States could cease publication in the next eighteen months.”

One of the newspapers with a time crisis is the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. In early January, the paper was given a sixty day notice. The staff have asked for donations in order to keep the newspaper functioning, even if it is just an online presence. The advertisers, in this economy, are reluctant to spend their promotional dollars with print media. Even if the employees can keep the newspaper website functioning, the printed Seattle Post Intelligencer may be approaching its last edition. And that will be a sad day.
