Cell Phones Use as a Risk Activity
Posted: January 12th, 2009 | Author: Catherine | Filed under: Privacy / Security | Tags: cell phones, driving, legislation, security, text messaging |In some communities, the use of a cell phone for conversations or text messaging while driving carries a heavy fine. A multitude of studies have shown that cell phone use decreases the driver’s attention away from operating the vehicle safely. Many tragedies have been linked to the driver using the cell phone. Now the National Safety Council has suggested a ban on cell phone use while driving:
“…the safety group is launching a nationwide effort to try to persuade businesses and state legislatures to forbid drivers from using any cell phone — hand-held or hands-free — while behind the wheel.
“The science tells [us] when [we're] on the phone while driving, it is a high-risk activity — very, very risky,” said Janet Froetscher, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. “But most people don’t understand that.”"

Legislation to curtail cell phone use while driving is very difficult to enforce. For example, the hands free function would allow a driver to engage in a cell phone conversation and avoid detection. Educating the public on the significant dangers of using the cell phone while driving may find greater success. Until people are aware of the dangers of multitasking while driving, the activity will continue covertly to avoid detection and subsequent fines. Hiding the cell phone activity just adds to the multitasking list.
