The question has never been about Paula Creamer’s ball striking talent. For years, people who follow women’s professional golf have recognized her golf skills. However, winning requires a mind-set to handle pressure and adversity. Ms Creamer has learned how to win and she has demonstrated it this season. Kudos to Paula Creamer for a stellar finish to her golf season.

Yup… The Samsung tourney was a coming of age for Paula Creamer. While the golf skills have been there since she was an amateur winning everything she tried, and while here rookie year on tour was amazing for anybody and staggering for a 17/18 year old, we had to wait until last weekend to find out that Paula has become a professional golfer.

Paula didn’t get the game perspective that comes with intercollegiate play — the final round pressures and the need to work well with those around you. This year’s rookie crop, including Ms. Lewis and others will hit the tour more mature and in many ways more ready than Paula is yet.

Don’t get me wrong. Paula made the right decision to hit the tour early. She earned the right in Q school, which she won by something like 8 strokes, and she has millions in the bank that her peers just showing up on tour may never earn.

But the tour is not a good or kind finishing school. It’s brutal. As Paula herself once said, nobody who hasn’t been out there knows how much pressure the tour puts on you.

So why was the Samsung special? Here’s what it took:
She was in contention from the start, but had to fight through bad weather, her caddy, and her own emotions to stay in contention through Friday. After the lousy run on the back 9 Friday she hung in just long enough to stay on the leaderboard. Then she had to go back to the practice tees and work out the bugs that had crept into her swing during the two tough starting rounds. Hey… Angela shot a double eagle just to make sure her presence was noticed.

Then, and I think this is most important, on moving day she moved and shot a bogey free round. And she was about the only golfer to turn in a bogey free round.

Finally… She put on a polished display Sunday showing good match strategy — the best she’s ever shown — as well as good ball striking. Sure… She played rough to rough on a couple of back nine holes she should have handled easily. But she shot par on them. Chalk up another bogey-free round.

If Paula keeps the bogey free rounds coming, the tour will keep the trophies coming. Should be fun to watch.
