My Three Computer Wishes
Posted: November 22nd, 2007 | Author: Catherine | Filed under: Uncategorized |I sat with a group of computer geeks today and people were talking about what they wished for, in terms of computer related equipment. The discussion ranged from details of what a computer case should have in terms of air flow and filters to minutia about the power supply and blinking/flashing lights. Then they asked me what my three wishes were. That was an easy question. It’s simple. This is what I would want:
1. I am still looking for the perfect keyboard. I still wander to the keyboard displays in stores hoping to find something new and comfortable. I look online too. It has become a quest. I truly believe that I would be faster and more productive if I had my ‘ideal’ keyboard.
2. I want my Logitech MX 700 cordless Optical mouse to last more than seven to nine months before failing on me. This is a great mouse for me. I have forward and backward buttons on the side. And I have it set for copy and paste on the buttons on top. My only complaint is the longevity of the mouse. It will not last beyond nine months at the very top end of the range. And I baby these optical mouses (mice?). Nevertheless, this is a routine expense now. (And please don’t mention the Logitech warranty. It is useless and makes me want to write nasty consumer letters.)
3. Finally, I would like something that keeps the laptop cool without drawing power from the USB outlet and thereby decreasing the battery time. There must be something quiet and rechargeable that does not need the battery resources of the laptop. - I have tried a couple of these cooling units that act as a shelf for the laptop. Noisy! The fans were noisy and people would stare if you used it in some place like a library.
As an aside, when I mentioned this cooling wish to my friends, they said they could make a water cooled unit with copper coils with a small pumping and quiet fans. - Did I mention that these were computer geeks? - Anyway, it would need an additional backpack to haul about. Plus, it would be heavy. I don’t doubt that it would work but I imagine it to look like a miniature still for alcoholic beverages - and might have me possibly arrested.
Anyway, those are my three wishes. They are not high on the ‘geekiness’ scale but any one of them certainly would make computing things easier.
