It’s becoming more and more difficult to keep up with the changes happening in schools. It is through the wonderful input from the readers of this space that it is possible keep tabs on some of the recent local developments. So, here is a recent edict in a middle school in Illinois - no hugging allowed:
“…Sharts said, “Hugging is really more appropriate for airports or for family reunions than passing and seeing each other every few minutes in the halls.”
When teachers started enforcing the new policy last month all hallways and classrooms in the 860-student school became hug-free zones.”
The principal of this school may have introduced a new term to the educational lexicon. The new term is “rampant hugging”… let’s try to stop it before it becomes a national crisis.
Yet another retailer has had a security breach. This time, it was the Gap:
“SAN FRANCISCO – A thief stole a laptop computer containing unencrypted personal information of 800,000 people who applied for jobs at Gap Inc., the clothing retailer announced Friday.”
The obvious question is ‘why were these data not encrypted?’. One would think that, in light of all the national and international press about security breaches, a major retailer like Gap would have mandated strict encryption standards. Undoubtedly, this issue will be raised when the lawsuits are filed.

Much of the criticism about Hope Solo’s post game remarks has focused on her lack of support for Briana Scurry. Ms Solo clarified her remarks today:
“…”I have felt compelled to clear the air regarding many of my postgame comments on Thursday night. I am not proud or happy the way things have come out,” reads a statement attributed to Solo on her MySpace page. “In my eyes there is no justification to put down a teammate. That is not what I was doing.”"
There were comments in a previous posting questioning why I would want Hope Solo as a team mate. - I would prefer to have a team mate who is honest and not speak in clichés. She has an obvious passion for her sport and confidence in what she does. Would it be preferable to take the field with a goalkeeper who thought that she would have been beaten equally or worse by the team from Brazil? Ms Solo remarks can be viewed as a statement of self confidence. Could she have stated it in a different manner? Of course, she could have. Remember, though, that this was an athlete who had to watch as her team was pummeled. Her statements reflect her competitiveness, her candor and her passion. And, yes, give me a team mate like Ms Solo any day…

There is a reported problem with the calculations in Microsoft’s Excel 2007:
“…In a blog post, Microsoft employee David Gainer said that when computer users tried to get Excel 2007 to multiply some pairs of numbers and the result was 65,535, Excel would incorrectly display 100,000 as the answer.”
I just assume that the calculations are correct and have been going on with the work. Now I am hoping that the problem is limited because, if it is not, then there is a huge amount of rechecking to do - and to think of the amount of reporting that would have to be reviewed is just disheartening. Argh!
There are moments of magic in sports. It’s memorable - and it instantly becomes part of the recallable, verbal history of the game. Such a moment was the goal that Marta scored against the United States women’s team, in the World Cup semi finals. It was speed, imagination, creativity, athleticism… the following YouTube clip captures the moment.
There is a Portuguese term: “o jogo bonito”. It is a term that some soccer fans apply to the game that they love. The term roughly translates as “the beautiful game”. Marta’s goal is an example - and it is now part of soccer magic.
