IBM is joining the ‘free movement’. Earlier in the day, Google announced its free software applications which are a challenge to Microsoft’s Powerpoint. IBM, on the same day, announced its own free offering:
“IBM on Tuesday launched a beta suite of free, online office applications intended to compete with the ubiquitous Microsoft Office and boost the presence of IBM’s Lotus Notes.”
There have been competition for Microsoft customers previously, with the open source applications. However, with two major firms like Google and IBM taking direct aim at the Microsoft customer base, Microsoft does not have the luxury of being passive in this sector. The marketing people in Redmond need to be creative in not only growing that market segment but also maintaining its present customer base. Remember, these offerings from Google and IBM are affordable (i.e. ‘free’)…

A University of Florida student was subdued using a Taser. There will be numerous spins on this incident. The student, Andrew Meyer, was unarmed and outnumbered by police officers. The incident is on a YouTube video (and there is graphic language on this clip):
This occurred during a forum with Senator John Kerry. Clearly, on the video, Senator Kerry is asking to respond to Mr Meyer’s question:
“…Meyer had about a minute and a half at the microphone before police stepped in to haul him away. As he tried to escape their grip, Kerry protested, “That’s all right, let me answer his question.”"
The video allows you to judge whether the police response was proportional to what was happening - without the ’spin’, damage control and blaming that is bound to follow. Everyone agrees with the concept of freedom of speech - it is just when it comes to the details, it is messy.

Google Docs is a free online challenger to Microsoft’s Powerpoint:
“…The new program will be included in Google’s free software bundle, called “Docs,” which users must be online to employ. And the company will sell a souped-up version to businesses, universities and government agencies for $50 a year per user.”

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is supporting embattled Idaho Senator Larry Craig. This is the senator who was charged and plead guilty in the Minneapolis airport incident. The ACLU believes that sexual solicitation is constitutionally protected:
“…”We clearly lay out what is the doctrine in terms of what speech is and is not protected,” Romero said. “To be able to solicit sex in private, in public spaces, for instance, is constitutionally protected speech.”"
It seems that sexual solicitation may be seen as a protected civil right. Let it happen to your wife, daughter, sister… - and then discuss how it is a constitutionally protected.

The U.S. Women’s Soccer team will advance. The team defeated Nigeria by one goal:
“SHANGHAI, China — Lori Chalupny gave the United States the fast start it was looking for in a 1-0 victory over Nigeria on Tuesday, a win that put the top-ranked Americans into the Women’s World Cup quarterfinals.”
The U.S. team has had unsteady starts in these World Cup matches but not against Nigeria. Now, the U.S. Women will advance in a match against England. One of the things that will catch the U.S. coach’s attention is the time of possession. The advantage there was to Nigeria - and the possession time will be a consideration going forward. This was a match under rain conditions and a very wet slippery field. For those who watched this in real time, it will be a sleep deprived day. These World Cup matches are in China - and telecasted to North America in the very early morning hours. The next sleep deprived day is Saturday - very early Saturday.
